How to Search Civil Dockets
Pick the right division before anything else. Circuit Court holds the general and complex civil docket. District Civil takes district-level cases along with unlawful detainers. Small Claims sits at its own desk with its own case type. Domestic Relations is Circuit Court work, staffed by the Circuit Clerk as a separate division. Estates and guardianships belong to Shelby Probate Court, outside the normal Circuit Clerk civil route.
For a free list view with dates, use the Shelby Docket List. Alacourt, also called Just One Look, is the paid statewide reader. It offers fuller case action summaries and document images. When a search comes up empty, the cause is often a wrong division, a name variant, an older file, or a restricted record. Limited portal coverage can be the culprit rather than a missing case.
- Choose Circuit Civil, District Civil, Small Claims, Domestic Relations, or the separate Probate Court.
- Search by the exact case number when it appears on a notice or pleading.
- If the number is unknown, use the official party spelling, approximate year, and case type.
- Match the court, filing date, party roles, and status before opening the civil docket.
- Request the named pleading, order, or certified judgment when its image is not available.
Shelby County Civil Docket Divisions
Civil dockets in Shelby County split by subject and jurisdiction. Circuit Civil carries the broader general civil docket. District Civil takes the lower-level matters, including unlawful detainer cases. Small Claims covers claims through $6,000 under local clerk guidance. The division you land in drives the case prefix, the search filter, the desk phone, the filing fee, and the counter where staff can explain an entry.
| Division | Typical docket | Direct line |

What a Civil Docket Shows
A Shelby County civil case action summary opens with the basics. The case number, court, filing date, judge, case type, and status appear first. Party blocks name the plaintiffs and defendants, or petitioners and respondents. Counsel is shown where available. The event list then tracks the complaint or petition, summons, service return, answer, motions, discovery notices, hearings, orders, judgment, and any later enforcement or appeal activity.
| Case number | A civil identifier such as CV-YYYY-NNNNNN, DV-YYYY-NNNNNN, or SM-YYYY-NNNNNN. |
|---|---|
| Parties | Plaintiff, defendant, petitioner, respondent, attorneys, and each role. |
| Filed actions | Complaint, summons, service return, answer, motion, discovery notice, and amendment. |
| Settings | Hearing or trial date, setting type, judge, and courtroom when entered. |
| Outcome | Order, dismissal, settlement entry, judgment, post-judgment motion, appeal, or enforcement entry. |
Whether you can open a document image depends on Alacourt access and confidentiality rules. A docket label being visible does not mean its attachment is public online.
Shelby County Civil Docket Service
Issued is not the same as served. A Shelby County civil docket may first show only that the clerk issued a summons. A later return tells you whether delivery was made, attempted, or unsuccessful. Read that sequence in order before assuming a default request has become an entered judgment. The typical flow starts with complaint, summons issued, service return, and answer or default request. It then runs through motions, setting, order, and judgment.
- Summons issued
- The clerk produced process for service. It does not prove receipt.
- Service return
- The filed account of the service attempt and its result.
- Default requested
- A party asked for relief based on failure to defend. It is not yet a judgment.
- Default judgment
- The court entered judgment after the required process and findings.
When the exact rights or relief matter, read the signed order itself. An index code and an event label are no substitute for the court's own text.
Types of Civil Cases on the Docket
Civil dockets in Shelby County cover many kinds of disputes. The division decides where the record begins. The case-type code is only an index category. It does not state the whole claim, so read the complaint or petition for the asserted facts and the relief sought. Access can also vary inside one category. A court may restrict a document, an identifier, or an entire file under law or order.
- General Circuit Civil claims and other matters within Circuit Court jurisdiction
- District Civil claims and unlawful-detainer proceedings
- Small Claims matters within the published local limit
- Domestic Relations cases handled by a separate clerk division
- Post-judgment garnishment, execution, and appeal activity where authorized
Probate and estate files run through Shelby Probate Court. Being noncriminal is not a reason to force them into an Alacourt Circuit Civil search.
Shelby County Civil Small Claims Dockets
The Shelby Small Claims division takes claims through $6,000. Its docket can show the statement of claim, service steps, response, and setting. Judgment and post-judgment collection events appear there too. Call the clerk line at 205-670-5274. Look for a SM-YYYY-NNNNNN style number rather than a Circuit Civil prefix.
Small Claims is its own local route. Fees and desks differ across civil case types, so do not assume one fits all.
The local Small Claims fee chart publishes the filing tiers.
Those amounts are filing fees, not charges for viewing or copying an existing docket.
Settings and Hearings on Civil Dockets
A civil setting in Shelby County can take many forms. It might be a motion hearing, status conference, pretrial event, or docket call. It could also be a bench trial, jury trial, small-claims trial, or another scheduled proceeding. The case action summary may list the date, time, setting type, judge, and courtroom. A scheduling order or signed notice gives more detail. Keep the county's annual calendar in perspective. It is a court-wide schedule, not a hearing notice for your case.
After a continuance, read forward. A motion asking to move a hearing does not set a new date. You need an order granting that request or a later setting entry. Do the latest events conflict? Call Circuit Civil, District Civil, or Small Claims with the exact case number. The Shelby County court calendar walks through the full date-confirmation sequence.
Note: A judge's working calendar and the clerk's entry can briefly differ. That can happen while a new setting is processed.
Shelby County District Civil Dockets
The District Civil division is the official route for district-level civil cases and unlawful detainers. Its direct number is 205-670-5260. Search with a DV-YYYY-NNNNNN number when one is printed, or use the party spelling, the approximate year, and the Shelby location in Alacourt.
Shelby County splits its civil dockets by division, so check the official District Civil page before assuming where a case sits. Sending papers to the Circuit Civil desk by mistake only slows things down. The county's District Civil fee chart lays out the filing costs that page's schedule currently lists for new cases.
The chart covers only what it costs to start a case. For copying, searching, and certification charges, ask the Shelby County clerk for a current quote, since those fees are set on a separate schedule.
Shelby County Civil Docket Timeline
A civil docket reads best in order. Start with the complaint or petition. Then watch for the fee receipt and summons. Next comes the service return. An answer, amendment, or counterclaim often follows. From there, discovery notices and motions can pile up before the court sets a hearing or trial. Some orders settle pieces of the case ahead of a final judgment. Afterward you may see a post-judgment motion, a notice of appeal, garnishment, or execution on the Shelby County docket.
Shelby County civil docket flow: Complaint › Service › Answer › Motions and Discovery › Setting › Order or Trial › Judgment › Post-Judgment Activity.
Read a motion and its order as two different things. A "disposed" status alone tells you nothing about the relief granted. When you need the exact result, pull the signed judgment from the court record.
Shelby County Circuit Civil Filing Records
Circuit Civil is the wider, general-jurisdiction civil track in Shelby County. Circuit judges ask that no courtesy copies of original pleadings be sent. That request comes from local guidance. It hints at how paperless the filing workflow has become. AlaFile takes the electronic submission and builds the case file from it, and the clerk and judge then add docket actions and rulings. Keep one caution in mind. AlaFile is a filing channel. It is not the everyday public docket reader. The clerk's Circuit Civil fee chart lays out the local filing charges.
That fee schedule shows what the Circuit Clerk charges, but it lists no single flat rate. A plain copy, a certified judgment, and a staff search of an older civil docket each carry their own cost.
Shelby County Civil Docket Judgments
A Shelby County civil docket entry may read "judgment," "dismissed," "settled," "default judgment," "appealed," or "reopened," yet the signed order always controls. Start with the judgment date and the entry title. Then look for an image in Alacourt. No image there? Give the Circuit Clerk the case number, the entry date, and the exact title. Say whether you want a plain or certified copy.
Best request: ask for the signed judgment by its docket date and title, not for “everything” in the file.
Keep the request narrow. That saves search time and holds down the copy bill. Before treating the first judgment as the final word, check for later appeal, garnishment, execution, or post-judgment motion entries on the docket.

Public Access to Civil Dockets
Who gets to see a Shelby County civil docket? Mostly, everyone. Rule 16 of Alabama's Judicial Administration governs inspection, copies, and what the clerk may charge for both. The state's public-records law, Alabama Code Section 36-12-40, backs that up. It grants access to public writings while allowing lawful exceptions. Some limits still apply. Filing and privacy rules can shield identifiers. Juvenile, adoption, sealed, or otherwise confidential case records face stricter limits under court orders. So a civil docket is public by default, with case-specific carve-outs.
Key rules:
Alabama Rule of Judicial Administration 16 governs inspection and copying of court records and related charges.
Alabama Code Section 36-12-40 addresses the right to inspect and copy public writings, subject to exceptions.
Alabama civil filing rules govern filing mechanics and privacy-related treatment of sensitive information.
A docket entry can be public while its attachment stays locked away. The reverse happens too. Redacting one sensitive field does not seal the whole case. If a clerk denies your request, press politely for specifics. Which rule, statute, or order controls the record? Also ask whether a redacted copy or a docket-only extract could be released instead. Often a narrower court record is available. That can be true even when the full file is not.
